The funk/rock phenomenon known as Here Come The Mummies brought their uniquely anonymous and entertaining live show to St. Louis Saturday for a performance at The Pageant.
In town for the second time this year, HCTM played to a near sellout crowd at The Pageant, this time in support of their newest CD “Bed, Bath, and Behind”, their 5th studio album.
After the band made their usual drum procession entrance via the back of the house (and winding through the crowd) they made their way up to the stage to begin what would be two straight hours of non-stop funky jams beginning with “Believe (In Things You Cannot See)”, “RA RA RA” and “Freak Flag”. They only ramped it up from there, performing a 22 song set that did not seem to last 2 hours. I guess time really does fly when you are having fun.
Without stopping to take any breaks HCTM didn’t let the crowd settle in, like most concerts do. In a fast paced, in your face, amped up style that would knock down many a performer, HCTM fed off it and the crowd and delivered a set that no one in the crowd would not have felt they got their monies worth. Nearly every direction I turned I saw someone dancing, and it didn’t matter if they were in costume or not (many fans dress up as mummies or in ancient Egyptian attire to come to the shows, making the entire show, onstage and off, a spectacle in itself).
The band (their true identities “masked” by their wrappings, but with reportedly several Grammy wins among them) performed a flawless set. They clicked on all levels and were so tight as a unit I was waiting for a lump of coal to come popping out on the stage somewhere.
For nearly every song they had a skit or showpiece to accent the song. From Libido Knievel bounding about the stage showcasing his “talents”, to throwing twirling freak flags about the stage, to the appearance of the famous cow-belt the band knows how to entertain with sexual innuendos and humor. But as much as a gimmick some people may think this band is, one needs only to see and hear the band perform live to realize that HCTM have great talent, a talent that has been kept a secret, so to speak, for far too long.
With radio friendly songs that are so catchy and funky, it’s hard not to dance at least a little while watching their show. They are based in Nashville, TN and perform primarily in the Midwest and South, but the rest of the country is missing out on this terrific band. It’s one thing to read about a HCTM show and quite another to see a show live in person. Believe me, once you see them live you will become a fan.
