Storm freaks and weather geeks
Storm freaks and weather geeks

I have a serious fascination with storms and chaotic weather patterns. The instability of earth energies seem to effect everything climate wise. I get aroused in storms. Riding Katrina out in Biloxi should have cured that, but it didn't. I want to watch. Drawn to watch. I feel an anticipation as each tropical wave forms off the coast of Africa.

When I lived in Missouri it was tornado season that I looked forward to each year. I don't want anyone hurt but weathers gonna do it's thing and it blows me away. Literally. And when it gets really bad, it scares me shitless but I'm still hooked.

I LOVE the weather as well. It fastinates me! I remember being in 1 hurricane, the year of Katrina. My family and a few friends were off to go on a cruise that ported out of New Orleans, and when we were flying in, Hurricane Dennis was right on the coast of Louisana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Well, it was suppose to hit New Orleans dead on but then took a sudden curve and went to Alabama and Mississippi. I remember walking around Bourbon Street, in the middle of these hurricane winds, because I had never been there. Whew! Talk about whiplash! But it was fun!!!
While out on the ship we got chased by another hurricane, Helen. We were in Cozumel, Mexico and they were boarding up windows to businesses and shops to prepare for the storm that was coming straight for them. We had to leave that port early that day, so we didn't get stuck in. To say the least, storms scare the "HeeBGBz" out of me, but they are beauitful to watch. In Cincinnati this year, we have had some wicked storms!

2 weeks later Katrina hit New Orleans

I moved back down here the weekend of Dennis. I was only here about a month before Katrina hit. I had $30, no plastic and a car with bad brakes so I stayed and rode it out. The sound of the wind blowing the trees is something that will stick with me. Hearing the roof groan and creak hoping it stays attached. If I had known what was happening just short distances away from me, I should have been terrified. The storm started to ease around 5 pm and we stayed at a house just across the fence from Keesler AFB. At 5 pm they played Star Spangled Banner as they usually do. It was just as we were starting to venture out of the house amidst downed trees and gusty winds. The sound system was scratchy and it was that point I felt that we'd made it through the storm okay. The whole experience was surreal.

I still enjoy the adrenaline of preparing for a hurricane. The boarding up and tying down.

Awesome! Keesler got hit pretty bad, it is really touching that they managed to do the national anthem anyway. It is a really moving thing to be on a base when they play it, everything STOPS, even cars right in the middle of the road, and all of the military members salute while it is playing.

I thought I was the only one that really loves a "bad" storm! I get a tad bit edgy if the wind is really really bad.

A couple years ago we had a bad ice storm. For almost a week, we had no heat, no water, no nuthin'. I was the only fool enjoying the "primitive" living situation. My poor Papa was having the most difficult time because he couldn't watch tv. lol We lived off canned food & candle light...... I was almost bummed when everything returned to normal. To me, it was a great time to really appreciate the things we take for granted. It was also a turning point that made me think more about living a more simple life.

I have some serious photo essays somewhere from Erin, Ivan, Dennis, so many of the ones that hit the Florida Gulf Coast. If I can find them I will post them along with a link. A friend and I went to New Orleans shortly after Katrina and snuck into an area we probably should've stayed out of to take photos. But after the first house with a "dead body" notation on the door we realized that we were really being asses and the enormity of the situation was beyond us so we left. We did take some photos of things like boats in the road and the remnants of our favorite restaurants (the E-coli warning at Manuel's Tamales!) but spent most of our time and effort and money helping with the clean-up. The fact that you survived Katrina in BILOXI is amazing and heart-warming. I too absolutely love the drama before a storm and the camaraderie after but hope to never see anything even remotely approaching Katrina again. Are you like us, secretly praying that you WILL get a storm but at the same time praying that it won't get YOU too bad?

Those are usually my prayers exactly...that everyone would be safe but I like seeing the power of nature! I think I would have been like you & gone around taking pictures of everything and of course helping. I can only hope someday that I can visit New Orleans. NOTHING can kill the spirit of the people there & that's truly inspiring!!

I'm always a little disappointed when they go somewhere else. I think I felt Katrina coming a couple of months prior. I felt an urgency to be down here. I guilt on that a little. Katrina was a monster. It washed away so many lives and damaged the rest. Lost pieces of my youth. Old haunts, bars, homes, smooching places, places where your kids played. The people gone, People you passed on the street a few hours before, you wonder if they made it. You wonder about the 90+ year old woman who rode it out near the bay, alone. Found sitting on her steps covered in leaves and stuff, house gone. She's still here. So am I. I can't help but be interested in something so fierce and uncontrollable.

Just took our grandchildren to the indoor waterpark in Dubuque,Iowa(where H.C.T.M. put on a kick-ass show 2 months ago).It started raining the afternoon we left...24 hrs. later they had over 20"of rain!...Holy cow...Now I just heard a levee broke on the Mississippi river in a town downstream and people are being evacuated.

That's crazy stuff. My brother lives in Iowa and said they've had a lot of rain. Twenty inches of rain in 24 hours. There's not much you can do to hold that much back.

Who's hot for Jim Cantore?

I had to write a haiku about him this morning. I used to joke with my coworkers that when he came here I would creep up behind him during a broadcast on the beach and drool on his shoulder. When that time came, it was Katrina that was coming not me and I had to find a hidey-hole before she kicked my ass.

Cakes, you can have Cantore. My heart belongs to Shephanie Abrahms, hell yes!!!! I wake up at five every week day morning, get my coffee, and watch Stephanie. What an awesome smile, and the nice boobs, tiny waste, and shapely booty are ok too, I guess. You mention how weather extremes excite you. But, how about the when it is serene? What do you think about those days of steady drizzle in October, or when the rain has cleared and you have that sunny, high pressure day that is cool without a cloud in the sky. Or how about a nice December snow that is not brutal like January's or February's when it is so quiet that you can hear the snowflakes hit the ground. I have never experienced it, but I think my favorite weather would be in the Northwest. I love cool, drizzlely days. They are very contemplative and great for reading, drinking good coffee, sleeping, and just sitting and dreaming away life.

Spring and fall excite me. Serene weather is good, but not if it's too hot or too cold. Steady drizzle can be nice if you get to sleep in. Several days of it usually starts getting me depressed. I don't do cold very well any more. I like the first day of a fresh snow and then it's just a pain in the ass. The Northwest is good for drizzle and you don't really mind it because it's the Northwest and full of nice visuals. I'm kind of one of the SAD people seasonal affective disorder or whatever. Lack of sunlight and I wilt.

Potential storm building up in the Atlantic. People in the islands need to watch this one. It's liable to be the first major storm this season.

This storm will probably become Emily today or tomorrow, then watch out. Warnings should go up for the Windwards and the Leewards as soon as they classify it a tropical depression. It may already be unofficially a tropical storm.

Emily-to-be projected path has trended more to the west. Climate conditions make her ripe and fertile. Here's the current model tracks. Which I'm sure will change a gazillion times before she gets to where she's going.

Keep in mind this hasn't been classified as even a tropical depression yet. Recon found tropical storm force winds, but they are waiting for the low level circulation to close off.

Yes I am a bit weird on the weather....I actually go outside and lookup when the weather sirens go off. I want to see a tornado, the storm. I actually usually have my windows open during a storm just so I can smell the rain.

I do too. I have a bigger fear of lightning than of the winds. I tend to run outside, take a few pics and run before I feel any static cling.

Tornadoes are spectacular to watch....only when they are out over open country. And not then if in my open country. Aftermath of one is like a dream even when you see it with you own eyes. Come to Kansas IMJ and chances are you will get to see one.

Would love to be a storm chaser but a smart one. One with lots of $$$$ so I could drive a TIV. Too many stupid ones out there and one of these days someone will die.

Tropical Storm Emily is getting herself together now. May be a hurricane by tonight or tomorrow. This is not good for Haiti/Dominican Republic.

Everybody in the southeastern US should be keeping a close eye on Emily. All the models predict a recurve but Emily keeps slowly moving west. The longer it waits to recurve the bigger the threat to Florida and the gulf.

This will be the storm to watch in about a week or so. Especially if the northern ridge stays in place and keeps it heading west.

Wow, looked what popped up this morning. Now there's 4 invests to watch. Right in a row. Tropical season is starting to kick in.

Just been looking over my Erin, Opal, Ivan, Georges, Katrina, Rita . . . etc etc photos and thinking that I am NOT ready for another one. So I am gonna keep playing Hurricane Party by Paul Sanchez and Hurricanes Floods and Fires by HTCM in self defense. And get the damn generator fixed.

Just heard that there was a bad storm at the Indy State Fair and the stage collapsed at the Sugarland concert. The stage blew into the grandstand w/injuries. I hope everyone is okay.

A Highschool acquaintance posted a pic on FB...the stage fell onto the track (where people were seated) with pieces going into the grandstands. A stage collapsed under/on Cheap Trick recently as well. Flashback to the PIP show last summer and thinking just how lucky we all were. Makes you appreciate what our Boys do for us at these outdoor venues/shows.

Per the news this morning, 4 dead and over 40 injured in this terrible accident. They said the storm was still 20 minutes away, and they had started evacuations, but a big wind gust preceded the storm, and that is what took the stage down.
My thoughts and prayers with all the victims and their families, the rescue workers, and all those who tried to help. What a horrible tragedy.

There are several new waves in the Atlantic. Invest 97L if it forms as predicted could be a headache in a week or so. Models forcast it into the gulf and huge. Mainly because that huge ridge over the southern US is supposed to break up and move away.

Current modeling shows a Florida panhandle hit in about 10 days. 97L is just now starting to build up in the Atlantic. Anyone on the gulf or east coast is gonna have to watch this one pretty closely.

We had a bad storm last night around midnight. Scared the living $h!T outta me. One lightning strike sounded really, really close. I was afraid to look outside this morning. A few years ago, a 20 ft. branch snapped off a tree & went through the windshield of my husband's car. It did $4K worth of damage.
